About The Pathway School

A nonprofit special education school, Pathway builds academic, social, and life skills

The Pathway School is a nonprofit special education school licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Founded in 1961, Pathway serves students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Intellectual Disabilities, serious emotional disturbances and other neurological impairments. Pathway’s programs are licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Private Academic Schools and approved by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Special Education to serve students ages 5–22.

Mission: Promote success and independence

The mission of The Pathway School is to build academic, social, and life skills in students with special needs to promote their success and independence after Pathway.

History: Among the first schools of its kind

At its founding in 1961, Pathway was among very few schools in the Greater Philadelphia area designed exclusively for learning disabled children by unifying the disciplines of psychology, psychiatry, medicine and social work with education.  Since then, Pathway has increased enrollment and staff who support the students, developed a vibrant learning environment on a 12-acre campus in Montgomery County, and solidified its reputation as a leader in innovative, high-quality programs and services.

A Message from Pathway's President & CEO

Dear Pathway School Community:

As we enter the last weeks of the school year, it is natural to look back on the preceding months and take stock of what has been accomplished at The Pathway School.

Our year began with two buildings, Valley Forge and Anthony Wayne, being returned to service after their total renovation! I am proud of how the “new” buildings turned out, and very happy to have four additional classrooms for our Upper School students.

This school year also began with the largest student enrollment in the school’s history. An increase in our enrollment reflects our school’s reputation for quality education, for which we are all appreciative. A higher enrollment also comes with additional challenges. We spent the greater part of the first three months of the school year getting our students to understand our school’s classroom and behavioral expectations. Thankfully, the programs we have adopted, including school-wide Positive Behaviour Supports and “Well Managed Schools” have been successful, and we are ending the school year with both a record high enrollment AND a positive school environment!

This time of the school year is our most active (our students would say it’s the most fun). As the weather turns warmer, we can provide more outdoor activities, more field trips, more experiential learning opportunities as well as regular school experiences such as the prom and the production of the school play.

I would like to commend the students and staff who teamed up to compete in regional Robotics competitions. For the second year in a row, Pathway Robotics won one area competition and competed at the regional finals at Lehigh University. I am proud that Pathway is the ONLY special education school that fields a competitive robotics team within the State of Pennsylvania!

Invariably, this time of year, we begin to finish preparing our graduating seniors for their commencement ceremony and for the next phase of their lives. In mid-June, 20 young adults will graduate from The Pathway School and embark on their lives outside of our school. We are proud of our graduating seniors and commend their families for the support they have provided to prepare these students. Best wishes to all Pathway graduates!

Thank you for your continued support of our school. We continue to work to make The Pathway School a great place for our students, their families and the faculty and staff.

Yours Sincerely,
