Speech Therapist (Autistic Support Classroom) – Open Position

The Speech Therapist’s primary responsibility in an autistic support classroom environment is to address student challenges relative to language and communication. The Speech Therapist is accountable for assisting students in improving their verbal, nonverbal and social communication.

Educational Schedule – School Year (10 months)

Monday – Friday (7.5 hrs./day)

 

Qualifications

Education

  • PDE Certified Speech Therapist
  • Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology
  • PA Occupational Licensed Speech Therapist
  • ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence – preferred

Experience

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience working as a speech therapist in an educational setting, preferred.
  • Experience working with students with social, emotional, and behavioral needs.
  • Experience working with the pediatric special need’s population.

Skills

  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team with other professionals (i.e., OTs, PTs, BCBAs, etc.).
  • Knowledge of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools.
  • School-based/behavioral health experience required within an ABA Framework.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with non-verbal students and/or students that have sensory needs, sensory dysfunction disorders and are on the autism spectrum.
  • Solid working knowledge with various forms of assistive technology.
  • Experience delivering services utilizing a variety of models (pull out, push in, collaborative, classroom-based, consultative) in various settings.
  • Working knowledge of special education legislation/IEP process.

Compliance Requirements

  • Must comply with Act 168 and submit a completed Sexual Misconduct Form.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a satisfactory PA criminal background check, Child Abuse & FBI clearances and pass a drug test, as well as a TB Test (within last 3 months).
  • Must be able and willing to drive and have a valid PA driver’s license.

Physical Requirements:

This position requires a high level of energy. Physical activities can include both sitting and standing for long periods of time, lifting, climbing, bending/stooping, grasping, and pulling. Must have full range of motion to provide possible emergency care and/or administer effective/safety techniques. This position requires walking and could include working in both an indoor environment as well as an outdoor environment (cold/hot).

 

Professional Responsibilities

  • Conduct screenings, administer formal and informal assessments, obtain additional diagnostic information as indicated.
  • Complete communication assessments that can inform treatment plans in the areas of receptive/expressive language, pragmatic language, articulation, fluency, and voice.
  • Analyze and interpret all information to make recommendations regarding need and level of services and related progress.
  • Implement behavior intervention for students as designated by the on-site BCBA.
  • Communication effectively and maintain positive working relationships with the student, parent, and school staff.
  • Promote impact philosophies, generating team spirit and creating and maintaining an environment that fosters staff satisfaction and maximizes productivity.
  • Develop appropriate IEPs based on students’ strength and needs.
  • Select and implement evidence-based practices which support the Speech and Language goals and objectives of the students.
  • Adjust intervention strategies based upon student performance.
  • Work cooperatively with school personnel, families, and local educational agencies.
  • Maintain records for all students identified and prepare appropriate reports.
  • Adhere to rules, regulations, laws, and appropriate ethical standards of best practices.
  • Performs related duties, special assignments and projects as requested consistent with the functions of the department and job description, which he/she is qualified to perform, assigned by an appropriate supervisor.
