Three students at The Pathway School were recognized by Philadelphia Financial Scholars (PFS) for their outstanding essay submissions about personal finance management in the organization’s annual citywide Financial Literacy Essay Contest.
What Was the Contest About?
In this contest, students were asked to write essays about a powerful topic: how personal finance education has empowered them to make smarter choices with their money. From saving strategies to spending habits, students shared how learning about money has changed the way they think about their financial future.
Where the Learning Happens
The three students, Lexi, Edwin, and Josiah, wrote their essays as part of Ms. Steinmetz’s Personal Finance class here at Pathway. In this class, students dive into real-world financial management skills.
They learn how to build a budget and stick to it, so their spending never outpaces their income. They explore the difference between needs and wants, study the basics of saving and interest, and learn about setting financial goals, whether that’s saving for college, a car, or their first apartment.
By the end of the course, students walk away with practical tools they can use for the rest of their lives.
Setting Students Up for Success

At The Pathway School, our goal is to prepare students to achieve success in life after graduation. Personal finance is a crucial part of reaching that goal. Understanding how to manage money is one of the most important skills a student can carry into adulthood.
Philadelphia Financial Scholars (PFS) is a nonprofit organization that provides free financial literacy and entrepreneurship education to high school students and families across the city.
