Occupational Therapist (Autistic Support Classroom) – Open Position

The Autistic Support Occupational Therapist’s primary responsibility is to evaluate sensory, motor, cognitive, social, and communication skills of students in a classroom setting.

Educational Schedule – School Year (10 months)

Monday – Friday (7.5 hrs./day)

Qualifications

Education

• Pennsylvania Department of Education – Special Ed Certification (OT)
• Master’s degree in occupational therapy
• Current PA license to practice occupational therapy.

Experience

• A minimum of 2 years occupational therapy experience working with children with autism in school or in practice.
• Experience with addressing and treating sensory processing issues and other typical challenges of young children with autism

Skills

• School-based/behavioral health experience required.
• Demonstrated ability to work with students that have sensory needs, sensory dysfunction disorders and students who are on the autism spectrum.
• Solid knowledge of and working experience with assistive technology.
• Experience delivering services utilizing a variety of models (pull out, push in, collaborative, classroom-based, consultative) in various settings.
• Working knowledge of special education legislation/IEP process.

Compliance Requirements

• Must comply with Act 168 and submit a completed Sexual Misconduct Form.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a satisfactory PA criminal background check, Child Abuse & FBI clearances and pass a drug test, as well as a TB Test (within last 3 months).
• Must be able and willing to drive and have a valid PA driver’s license.

Physical Requirements:

This position requires a high level of energy. Physical activities can include both sitting and standing for long periods of time, lifting, climbing, bending/stooping, grasping, and pulling. Must have full range of motion to provide possible emergency care and/or administer effective/safety techniques. This position requires walking and could include working in both an indoor environment as well as an outdoor environment (cold/hot).

Professional Responsibilities

• Responsible for assessment, evaluation, and reassessment procedures for students.
• Responsible for providing appropriate intervention services designed to enhance the student’s potential for learning, to assist students in acquiring those functional performance skills needed to participate in and benefit from the educational environment; and, to help the student function independently.
• Plans and develops intervention goals that are educationally relevant and will be used in student’s educational programs.
• Develops an IEP for each student assigned and monitors IEP throughout the year.
• Maintains documentation that is professional, efficient, and accountable and conforms to state and agency policy.
• Consults and collaborates with IEP team members to review progress monitoring and assess the integrity of implemented OT strategies.
• Attending staff meetings, student team meetings and other school meetings as requested.
• Facilitates in-service education and professional development for education staff and parents, when needed.
• Teaches and supervises other professionals and paraprofessionals who are involved with the implementation of the intervention procedures.
• Stays educationally informed through continual professional study and by attending workshops and conferences.
• Performs related duties, special assignments and projects as requested consistent with the functions of the department and job description, which he/she is qualified to perform, assigned by an appropriate supervisor.
