Classroom Teacher – Emotional Support
This position is responsible for planning, developing, delivering, and evaluating appropriate individualized educational services, learning programs and instruction for special needs students in both self-contained and integrated settings in consultation with other school personnel.

Reports directly to the designated School Principal with an indirect report to the Director of Education.
Qualifications
Education
Master’s degree in special education a plus. Bachelor’s degree in special education required
Certification
Must have Pennsylvania Special Education Certification. Must have Elementary Education Certification in the State of Pennsylvania.
Experience
-
A minimum of 3 years of experience working with and supervising paraprofessional staff.

A minimum of 3 years of experience teaching students with significant social and emotional needs required.
Technical Skills
-
Ability to provide diagnostic testing and function as part of the diagnostic team process.
-
Ability to work with Individualized Education Plans (IEP’s).
-
Ability to learn and apply Pathway School-wide Positive Behavior Support System (PBS) as well as individual student Behavior Support Plans.
-
Demonstrated ability to work with students that have moderate to severe social and emotional difficulties.
-
Demonstrated ability to adapt curriculum to meet students’ learning needs as well as motivate students to engage in the learning process.

Demonstrated ability to follow established procedures when students are in crisis.
-
Must be able to collaborate and communicate with parents, school districts, related service providers and paraprofessional staff to meet student needs.

Compliance Requirements

Must comply with Act 168 and submit a completed Sexual Misconduct Form.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a satisfactory PA criminal background check, Child Abuse & FBI clearances and pass a drug test, as well as a TB Test.

Must be able and willing to drive and have a valid PA driver’s license.
Physical Requirements
This position requires an important level of energy. Physical activities can include both sitting and standing for extended periods of time, lifting, climbing, bending/stooping, grasping, and pulling. Must have full range of motion to provide emergency care and/or administer effective/safe CPI techniques. This position requires walking and could include working in both an indoor environment as well as an outdoor environment (cold/hot).
Professional Responsibilities

Supports and performs job duties in accordance with the established mission and values of the Pathway School.

Develops an individualized education program (IEP) for each student assigned to his/her classroom based on current educational and emotional/behavioral assessments/ evaluations. Revises IEP, when required, subject to established procedures.
-
Requests further educational assessment information when needed from educational specialists or consultative assistance from clinical staff.
-
Provides individual assistance and direction to students in learning, counseling, and classroom management situations.
-
Maintains assessment/evaluation information and a current copy of the IEP for each assigned student in classroom files for use in planning instruction.
-
Shares IEP information with Instructional Coordinator(s) and/or 1:1 staff; makes certain that said staff clearly understands their IEP responsibilities; maintains appropriate documentation.

Prepares classroom lesson plan, which clearly considers student differences.

Instructs assigned students according to the established IEP goals, designated objectives, and Pennsylvania curriculum guidelines.

Maintains appropriate classroom discipline.

Uses the corrective teaching interactions from the Student Achievement Model to re-teach inappropriate use of social skills.

Uses ongoing behavior teaching interaction from the Student Achievement Model training to address “out of instructional control” behavior.

Monitors student progress on IEP goals and maintains a record of each student’s instruction, including IEP objectives mastered.

Collects and maintains all appropriate student data as directed by his/her supervisor.
-
Prepares, plans, and implements a therapeutic classroom.

Participates in daily debriefing and planning with related service providers, instructional coordinator to include IEP team meeting and interagency meetings.

Prepares for and contributes to student team meetings, parent-team conferences, and IEP planning meetings.
-
Participates in ongoing staff development training program including, but not limited to, training in: Student Achievement Model, Well Managed Classroom, CPI, classroom management, Positive Behavior Support, physical restraints, and instructional strategies.

Reinforces appropriate social skills using “Powerful Praise” interactions as prescribed in the Student Achievement Model training.

Writes student progress reports as determined by the School Principal.

Administers informal and standardized educational tests.

Requisitions textbooks, instructional materials and supplies as needed through established procedures.

Makes appropriate and effective use of the assigned Instructional Coordinator.

Maintains student attendance records and submits required information to supervisors according to established procedures.

Contributes to in-service education programs at the request of an Educational Supervisor and/or the Educational Director.

Participates in the development of curriculum, instructional materials, and techniques.

Assists in developing and carrying out research or project plans as assigned by the Educational Director.

Any other duties, consistent with the functions of my department and job description, which I am qualified to perform, assigned by an appropriate supervisor.
