Speech and Language Therapy
The Speech and Language Therapy Department strives to provide the skills and strategies necessary for students to communicate competently within their educational, vocational and residential settings.
The speech therapists participate in the intake process for prospective students and provide diagnostics as needed. Students are identified for services per current Individualized Education Program (IEP) related services, diagnostic team recommendations and teacher referrals. Each student’s speech therapy delivery model is structured to provide programming that supports the student’s unique strengths and needs. Therapy may be delivered to students individually or in various sized groups with the advantage of flexibility and modification in scheduling, as the student’s needs change. Students are also treated in their classrooms, at jobsites, in residential settings and in other school environments. Consultation with team members is consistently provided and IEP development is a collaborative effort among teachers and specialists.
The members of the speech therapy department participate in ongoing professional development. Students benefit from the staff’s training in all areas of speech and language, including assistive technology, sign language, PECS , Verbal Behavior training, social skills development, and many disorder specific topics.
