Practical Academics Program

This program is offered to those students for whom a continuing academic-emphasis program would not adequately prepare them for life after Pathway. Reading , math, spelling and written expression are taught with an emphasis on practical applications. This program accommodates students who need functional reading such as menu words and survival signs, as well as students who can profit from instruction using high interest/low readability materials. In addition to classroom instruction in math, application of these skills is practiced during trips to grocery stores and fast food restaurants. Emphasis is also placed on the development of basic meal preparation skills in our training center and on the development of such skills as doing laundry (with both commercial and personal machines), making beds and organizing closets. Students of high school age are included in the career education program, which provides instruction in hands-on and community-based opportunities in pre-vocational and vocational areas.
