Self-Control Skills

  • In order to be successful in the learning environment, students must be positively engaged in the classroom.

  • They must have control of their physical self, emotional self and thinking self.

  • Students need to learn and be consistently reinforced for the demonstration of good self-control.

  • Each skill is broken down into achievable behaviors that students can learn, practice and generalize in all of their learning and living environments.

Ignoring Negative Behavior

  • Look away from the person acting in a negative way

  • Tell yourself "I'm not going to let him/her…(bother me)

  • Take a deep breath

  • Ask an adult for help or leave the situation if you feel like you can't ignore the person

Self-Control
  • Identify the behavior that you are losing control of

  • Use a strategy to help yourself regain control

  • Distract yourself (think about other things / do another activity)

  • Use positive self-talk

  • Participate in physical activity

  • Wait until an appropriate time to engage in the behavior again

Controlling Your Emotions
  • Recognize your body signs that indicate you are getting emotionally upset

  • Use a coping strategy to help yourself calm down (positive thinking, relaxation activities, going to a quiet space)

Using a Coping Strategy
  • Reflect on the coping strategies that you identified work for you

  • Refer to your list of strategies that work

  • Request to use a strategy

  • Return to learning when you are able to

Conflict Resolution
  • Cool off – ensure that you are in a good emotional place to problem solve

  • Use "I messages" to communicate what is bothering you

  • Listen and restate what you heard the other person communicate

  • Take responsibility

  • Brainstorm solutions and agree to one that works for both people

  • Agree and thank the other person for working through the problem with you
